I can be squeamish – an understatement – about exploitation of animals, but Morgan’s quiet poetic tone bypasses maudlin sentiment. 

Instead, the reader is buoyed by Andie the protagonist’s remarkable resilience. Morgan’s insights hit home without causing emotional injury.
