Duelling Composers – Staves Drawn! (Australian Festival of Chamber Music)

Liszt vs Brahms! Reich vs Glass! AFCM brings together a selection of works by composers who disliked each other intensely.

Classical music is often regarded as serious, sophisticated and conservative, and its performers and composers as generous-hearted souls wholly supportive of each other. The concept behind this evening’s concert blows this notion to smithereens as it parades music by composers who disliked each other’s music.

A fierce unity is demonstrated by The Andromeda Sax Quartet which makes a strong contribution to the Festival’s program through a raft of contrasting pieces. One of the rewarding aspects of listening to a variety of the Festival’s violinists, cellists and other instrumentalists is how each has a signature tone.

Arguably too long, this event is nevertheless another enjoyable sharing of contrasting chamber repertoire interpreted by phenomenal musicians.
